I can move it around but the screen remains black no matter how long I wait. A few seconds later, the arrow pointer reappears in the upper left corner of my iMac's display. My screen goes completely black, and the arrow pointer vanishes. If you know of a better uninstaller, then please let me know. CleanMyMac finds them all and deletes them, and I can confirm before hand which files I will allow it to delete. BTW, I use CleanMyMac as an Uninstaller because even when I use an app's official uninstaller, it usually leaves behind plists and the like. Yes, I uninstalled CleanMyMac but that doesn't resolve the issue. I downloaded the latest security update manual installer from Apple here, but it too requires a Restart to fully install! It's therefore utterly impossible for me to install the recent security update! Obviously, I am quite displeased at the moment. What upsets me is that when I choose the Restart command from Recovery, it works! But when I choose Restart from within MacOS, I get the Black screen and Arrow.Īnd thanks to fl3450, we see I am not alone here. Just like my Clone though, there are NO ERRORS: So after some fist shaking and heavy breathing, I rebooted into Recover again, so as to run Disk Utility on my internal SSD. After the cloning, I booted from my internal SSD and tried to Restart. I know there are no errors at all on the Clone because I checked that in Recovery's Disk Utility too. Still get that maddening Black screen and arrow in upper left corner on Restart and Shutdown.īecause I have a Time Machine backup and a CCC clone, I rebooted from my Clone (to ensure it was in perfect booting order), then used CCC to wipe my internal 1TB Apple SSD and subsequently copy my clone to the SSD. Sadly, but not surprisingly, that fixed nothing. I then rebooted with CMD-R held down and reinstalled High Sierra, not deleting anything. I gave up on the Terminal command because it took forever and did absolutely nothing all that time. However Security Update 2020-004 still shows it needs to be performed.Īnyone else seeing this? I have seen this issue on other boards with no resolution. 3 seconds then the cursor shows up and can move but the computer was frozen - black screen only. Also, the Apple timer that is normally present during shutdown is never seen.ģ) I now needed to remove power and restart the computer.Ĥ) Once restarted the iMac functions normally, however when I attempt to shut it down again the iMac it again freezes requiring me to remove power.ĥ) On one attempt to installed the Security Update I left the computer in this frozen condition for 2 hours with no change, thinking the update may take a while.Ħ) I can get the iMac to stop freezing on shut down by using the following commands in Terminal: When attempting to perform Security updates (both 4) my iMac freezes in the middle of the restart process.ġ) I attempted to perform the update and when the update restarted the computer, the iMac restart froze.Ģ) The freeze acts like the following: Once the computer has shut down all the apps the screen goes black for approx. When performing this security update my computer freezes in the middle of the restart. I have a 2011 iMac running High Sierra 10.13.6. I also followed one person's advice (again, not to resolve my issue but to resolve booting into a Black screen) where I boot into Single User mode and then run Disk Utility, then delete login prefs, then delete the AppleUpdate, but that did absolutely nothing for my iMac, at all.Īny advice you can kindly provide would be greatly appreciated. Yes, I have shutdown and yanked the power cord and done an SMC reset, but nothing improves. Not sure if that is related to the black screen, but I get the same exact errors every single time I run Disk Utility. When I boot with CMD-R held down and run the Disk Utility check on my internal 1TB Apple SSD (or do the same in Single User mode), it says my disk is OK, but it does give me some odd errors as shown in this screenshot: Even after waiting a very long time, I still see that. But even in Safe Mode, if I choose Restart or Shutdown, I get a spinning spiked wheel for a time, but then I get the Black Screen and Arrow Pointer. I can hold down the power button on back until the iMac powers off, then press it again and boot to the desktop. But as a result of this problem, I cannot install the current security update (2020-002 10.13.6), even when I click the Restart button in Apple Store Updates. But when I try to either Restart my High Sierra 2015 5K iMac or choose Shutdown, I get a black screen with arrow point. I can hold down CMD-S and boot into single user mode just fine. I can hold down Shift and boot into Safe Mode just fine. Googling this issue only shows solutions for people who BOOT to a Black Screen with Arrow Pointer.
